Pastel de nata, the egg custard-filled pastry, are found just about everywhere in Portugal. On our first two trips to Portugal we ate relatively few of them. [In fact, on our first visit I don’t think we even tried a pastel.] Last summer, however, after canceled flights nearly ruined a vacation, I decided that one way to salvage the trip was to eat a pastel de nata every day that we were in 🇵🇹.
We continued this trend during our week in Lisbon this winter. I also decided to conduct a “Power Ranking” of the nata we ate [both for fun and to inform the decisions of future Lisbon visitors in search of egg tart deliciousness]. To start, and without value judgment, here’s the list of the pastelarias we visited
- Day 1: Saga
- Day 2: Santa António
- Day 3: Manteigaria [Bairro Alto original]
- Day 4: Castro [the smaller cafe next to Elevador de Santa Justa]
- Day 5: Fábrica da Nata [Restauradores location]
- Day 6: Bolas + Natas
- Day 7: Manteigaria [Time Out Market edition]
The Power rankings
While this should be obvious, as it’s true with almost all baked goods, the sooner after preparation the pastel is eaten, the better. In my Power Rankings, freshness was the primary factor. When the nata weren’t fresh, ambiance or overall experience was used to complete the rankings
#1 Manteigaria [Bairro Alto] This was by far the freshest pastel de nata we consumed. The ambience, a narrow, standing-only space where you can enjoy your pastry along with a coffee or port while watching the pastry chefs at work, is also a delight. [Don’t linger, though. Space is at a premium!]
#2 Castro
#3 Manteigaria [Time Out Market] The pastries here aren’t quite as fresh and the ambience isn’t the same, but they are still very tasty.
#4: Santa António
#5: Fábrica da Nata
#6: Bolas + Natas While the nata themselves weren’t anything special, they let you pair the pastry with a beverage for a very reasonable price. Pastel and a HUGE wine pour enjoyed on a terrace with views over the Tagus for 4€ was quite great.
#7: Saga

Key Takeaway: Given the importance of freshness, it’s best to visit the touristy spots, as they are pumping out fresh pastries all day. Bom apetite!
